Frites is a well established lunch spot that I infrequently visit for work purposes. The food is fine but WOW, the service is a delight. We were served by a young man, named Toby. Highly professional in his recommendations and really made our lunch special. Would 100% return due to this reason and this reason alone. The world would be better with more Tobys.
The food was just okay, nothing memorable and the only thing I liked was the starter salad. Even the mussels which are usually good in other Frites were mediocre. The worst was the service. One of the waitresses were nice but all the other ones were very dismissive. Especially the greeter who brought us to our table. She actually sounded rude and told me in an annoyed tone to talk to my server when I asked to order something.
I have always adored that classic interior design of Frites with its high ceilings, a brightly-lit bar to one side and cherry wood 🪵 furnishings.
Food was a little disappointing this time though. The lobster risotto was more like a tomato 🍅 risotto as there wasn’t any noticeable notes of seafood/lobster flavour. The risotto rice was so also way too hard for my liking.
The 🥩steak was of mediocre quality as well, with a lot of tendons in the meat making it rather difficult to chew. The texture of the meat itself was also rather mushy, and there was no sign of the grain of the meat (ie the visible pattern formed by muscle fibre in the meat).
Considering their price point, my previous experience with them and their reputation, I was expecting better quality food 😭Guess I would stick to their mussels and pork knuckles next time, which was delicious from my last visit to their CWB branch.

I was disappointed with my recent visit to the restaurant. They advertised an all-you-can-eat mussels special on Monday nights, and based on a previous positive experience, my companion and I decided to order two servings of mussels in white wine sauce. We placed our order with a waiter, but when the mussels arrived, we immediately had doubts if it was what we had ordered. We called the same waiter over to check, and to our surprise, he admitted that it was the house version and offered to bring the white wine sauce later. We were taken aback that he knowingly served us the wrong dish without any apology or explanation.
We decided to accept the dish without making a fuss, but we were thoroughly disappointed. The mussels were completely lacking in seasoning and didn't taste fresh. It was a flavorless experience, made worse by the abundance of empty shells. I would rate the taste as 1 out of 5 and the freshness as 3 out of 5.
Feeling disheartened and losing our appetite, we called over another waiter for assistance. This waiter promptly apologized and brought us a new portion of mussels in white wine sauce. However, even with the new dish, we were once again disappointed. The mussels lacked the aroma of white wine and any other flavors, leaving them bland. The freshness of the mussels was slightly better this time. I would give an extra star to the second waiter for his attentiveness and apology.
Overall, the experience was not right, considering the incorrect dish served initially and the lack of flavor in both servings. It left us disappointed and affected our mood.
The food is excellent. And the place was quiet when we got there. Best brunch!
Great food as usual. However it is a bit too crowed and open, not really a good option for conversation.
Quite a nice place to have lunch though a bit too crowded. Frites taste nice especially when it is just put on your table. Menu rotate not frequently.
I was lucky enough to enjoy the incredible hospitality from a member of staff named Toby. Amongst the hustle and noise Toby was clear and concise and made sure our food and drinks came out e tremely quickly. While the food is great the service myself and my colleagues received was IMPECCABLE. I am convinced Toby will have a fantastic career at Frites and look forward to staying in touch in the future.
